Ichthammol – The Wonder Ointment

Several million years ago horses grazed on plants that would be the basis of an amazing ointment. Known as icthammol, black ointment or drawing salve, it is used to treat wounds, skin conditions and abscesses affecting descendants of these early horses.
Icthammol ointment is derived from sulfur-rich oil shale, a type of rock which is made up of organic material. After being mined and distilled, the resulting substance is dark reddish- brown to black color with a tar-like odor.

Comfort and confidence rely on balance . . . and balance relies largely on core strength.

In this series focusing on RIDER confidence, we’ll cover a number of ways to develop this fundamentally important attribute.

From this rider/writer’s perspective, the most essential physical attributes of the confident equestrian are: A Strong Core, Good Seated Balance and Well Developed Proprioception. The love of the horse, the desire to ride, and the value of miles in the saddle are also enormously important elements.

In Defense of the Horse

Not all horse trainers are good, and not all are bad.
But all get blamed at one time or another for something they have no control over – the horse which simply can’t win in the show ring or at the track.
Some horses lack good conformation, or smooth gaits, talent or speed. The owner may not believe it, but it is true.
The trainer tries hard, does everything he possible can, asks advice, works long hours, but still the horse can’t win.
Is it the trainer’s fault?
Sometimes, but only now and then.

Don’t Be a Horse Whisperer

Sometimes I like to pretend I’m the strong, silent type.

When it comes to horses, big mistake.

Horses don’t want you to be too strong. If you go macho-man, one of two bad things happens. The horse proves he’s stronger, or the horse gives up. In either case, the horse’s performance is always on the poor side.

Large Animal Rescue

Many of us grew up watching “Lassie”. The poor collie kept busy leading rescuers to accident-prone Timmy after he fell down cliffs, got stuck in quicksand or ended up in abandoned mine shafts. After a bit of drama, the rescuers successfully extracted Timmy from his entrapment.
Would the rescuers have succeeded if it had been Lassie in the “well”? What if it had been a horse? What if it was your horse?

Don’t Let Your Horse Get Thrush

In the world of horses, thrush is not a songbird. It’s a dirty bird.
Thrush is an unhealthy condition of the hoof which is most frequently blamed on a dirty stall. It ought to be blamed on conformation and poor hoof management.
While it is true unsanitary conditions can be a cause of thrush, lack of exercise, configuration of the hoof and improper or inadequate trimming of the wall, sole and frog is more likely responsible.

The Coughing Horse

The sound of a coughing horse can make things come to a halt. Conversation stops, chores are paused, training and riding lessons are interrupted as heads turn to look at the horse. Could the horse just be clearing a “tickle”, or could the cough be an indication of a serious disease?
Everyone watches to see if the horse will cough again. Activity resumes if there is no more coughing – a slight pause in the daily routine. But if the coughing continues the audience becomes more attentive.
